Episode 40 - Flight in Time and Other Listener Stories Part 5

Woodhall Spa Airfield, early 1940s. ‘They got to the NAAFI and went inside. It was bright, warm and a welcome place to shelter from the cold and wet conditions outside. They each had a cup of tea and a bowl of stew and sat at a table by the window while they ate their food and warmed themselves up. Nothing felt weird and nothing was noticeably amiss. Yet out of the window, they noticed two airmen walking on the airfield, presumably returning from a flight … but was it a flight from the unknown?’

This is Flight in Time, Episode 44 – the fifth and final part of the Haunted UK Podcast’s listeners’ stories … and for the last time (this season) we are going to be amazed, in awe and – let’s face it – frightened to the core by your experiences.

‘My lungs collapsed, and I required an emergency tracheostomy and multiple surgeries. A number of times my heart stopped for minutes at a time. In one particular incident I was rushed into emergency surgery, my poor mother asked the surgeon if I would survive. As the surgeon took me from my mother, he said, ‘put her son into my hands, and into the hands of fate!’. During this surgery I was about to be pronounced dead before the doctors managed to resuscitate me.

On recovery, I grew healthy and strong … but fast-forward to my travels though … and the strange events start to become apparent …’

‘My final experience – and by far the most terrifying and memorable for me in that house – happened the day that we were moving out of the property. The year was 2008 … I was eight years old at the time. I was given the task by my mother of going to the very top floor of the house to get a cardboard box that lay at … the top of the staircase … Call it survival instinct, or knowing what was in that house already, but I never trusted it. Seeing the stairway was clear, I tentatively took the first steps upwards …’

One late evening, I was sat downstairs alone, when everyone else had gone to bed. I was watching a movie on the TV, and I wanted to see the end as I wasn't that tired. Out of respect for the others in the house, I'd turned the volume down – to not disturb them – even though they were quite a way up in the house. As I was sat there, I began to feel uneasy, not something I'd ever felt in that house, or anywhere else for that matter. Feeling anxious, I was strangely afraid of making any sudden movement; I felt like I was being watched, I guess … this is when I began to hear something … it sounded like a cat’s bell slightly ringing, just like you'd hear if a cat was scratching itself. Now, they did have a cat, but I was certain that it didn't have a bell on its collar. It only seemed to ring for a second or two before it stopped, and made way for something that made my blood … run … cold …

‘It all really kicked off a month into living there. Three of the girls had gone home for the weekend … and three of us stayed. On the Saturday night, we were all at home in the lounge. The lounge certainly wasn’t an easy place to be: dark, musty, oppressive – even my dad felt a presence there when we first moved in, and not wanting to frighten me … he didn’t tell me. So, there we were relaxing, thinking about what we could watch, setting ourselves up for a Saturday night in when … suddenly, we heard loud running footsteps above us to the point where the ceiling was actually bouncing. We screamed, and all assumed a burglar had broken in as the front door was unlocked. The noises intensified and we got more and more panicked and terrified – but after trying to call our boyfriends to come round and getting no answer – we decided to investigate ourselves. Slowly, we started walking up the stairs to find out what was going on – I remember shaking – and when we were halfway up a loud bang at the top of the stairs sounded … and then a clattering of running footsteps towards us down the stairs … but we couldn’t see anything.’

The mist seemed to be swirling across the surface of the water at a measured deliberate pace; the woman watched in complete disbelief as it began to form into the shape of a human-like figure with wings. As the figure continued to take shape and rise above the water, she wasn’t sure if it was an angel, demon, good, nefarious; but she knew it wasn’t of this earth and it had some intent towards her – the woman panicked and fled the park as quickly as she could.

This is episode 39 of the Haunted UK Podcast, and in this episode, we're going to learn about the ghosts and hauntings which go on at a house which was never, or perhaps … could be lived in: Woodchester Mansion.

Since the dawn of civilisation with its mastery of communication, stories of curses have endured. Whether it be on the tomb of an ancient pharaoh, or the sacred stone of a Scottish clan, the power of words to conjure up a protective curse have brought terror, intrigue and death to so many people over thousands of years. Curses stretch not only through languages, continents and cultures, but also seemingly can extend their powers to families, items and even numbers ... but can all of this be true? ... or is this just a case of us simply 'believing' that something bad will happen when we're told that it will? Is it the power of our own minds that can inflict a curse upon us through the simple idea of suggestion? ... or is there more to it than meets the eye???

We placed the glass onto the board, and all reached out to touch it together, it was like a scene from a horror movie. All slightly apprehensive, we looked around at each other and started to ask questions like, ‘is anybody there?’ and ‘will someone talk to us?’. A few minutes passed … and disappointingly nothing happened. Then … suddenly … completely unexpectedly … the glass started to move; we all stared at each other in complete disbelief; the room going eerily cold with both dogs letting out spine-tingling howls. The dogs then proceeded to bark and howl uncontrollably, running and jumping, bouncing off the walls of their kennel and snarling like rabid animals. Nothing I said or did would calm them down … and, in all truth, it absolutely scared the hell out of me.  

As Tom was sitting next to the bar of the pub, where he had been the landlord for just a year, he was thinking about everything that had gone on whilst he and his family had been there. It was time to move on. It was time to put their nightmare firmly behind them. A nightmare which made them question reality and everything they believed in. A nightmare which certainly brought Tom to the edge of his sanity. I think it would be fair to say, Tom and his family were frightened and ready to make their escape and move on to another pub … As Tom reflected on this, he watched the new landlord Tony and his wife Debbie move in, making sure to bring their own till from their previous pub...a tradition that's followed by many landlords and landladies…but they were about to get a very real taste of what was lying in store for them at The George Inn Hotel. 

On the 16th July 2021 I released an episode of the show which became so popular that many listeners have been asking for a follow-up ever since. That episode was Time Slips, and it dealt with an element of the paranormal which many find completely unbelievable...until they hear the stories. We know that many famous Physicists such as both the late Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein believed that time travel was theoretically possible....it was just that our technology was lagging behind...way behind, and still is. The energy needed to accomplish a feat such as time travel is almost unthinkable and it's fair to say that it'll be hundreds of years in the future before the human race will even begin to dabble in this paradoxical and potentially dangerous element of science...but what if some people have already crossed over into another time...and come back to tell the story.  

Predictions of the Future In 1983 a movie, based on a novel written by Stephen King, was released starring Christopher Walken, and directed by David Cronenberg. It told the story of an everyday schoolteacher who, after a terrible car accident, fell into a coma. He was moved to a special institute where his mother and father hoped that one day he would recover and wake up. Five years after the accident, he did just that...but he woke up with a very special gift...or a ‘curse’ as he called it. Whenever he touched someone, he could see their past and future. Something as innocent as the shaking of hands, or even a hug would almost instantly cause him to be immersed into a point of time where he could see what had happened, or what was going to happen to that person and their loved ones. That movie was called The Dead Zone, and if you have any interest in the paranormal, then I urge you to watch it. 

‘When there were almost a hundred people working around you every day, you never really had time to take notice of strange things going on. Rumours would circulate about a particular room or the gossip about yet another caretaker leaving after two months, but you just got on with it and carried on. It was when the numbers started to drop because of relocation that things REALLY began to get noticed’...part of Carole’s story regarding her experiences at her previous place of work. 

There is a world beneath our feet that exists which we know little about. Miles and miles of tunnels both man-made and natural spread out around our planet like the tentacles of some immense creature; and all the time more are being dug and more are being found. Intricate cave systems with underground rivers and lakes, spectacular huge caverns and even cavities filled with massive crystals continue to surprise scientists and explorers as they are being discovered. Some of the deepest mines on Earth can stretch to an astonishing 4 km underground, with temperatures reaching 60 degrees Celsius with a humidity factor of 95%. Discoveries have proved that life can exist in these hostile conditions, but what else could be down there in the darkness? Is it possible that we may have disturbed the existence of creatures which only a handful of people have ever seen...with some, never returning to the surface? And what about the generations of people who lived, worked and died in some of these mines, caves and caverns...do their ghosts continue to haunt these dark and lonely places to this day?? 

‘At first, I wasn't sure if it was the house or if it was me, but throughout a period of around eight months I came to realise that I had a doppelganger...one that followed me but stayed in the shadows; one that would appear without being seen; one that would torment and terrify me. Nobody else saw us together, but on the rare occasions I would have friends say that they had spotted me out somewhere and I didn't react, or that they had approached me to speak to me, but I would give them the coldest and evilest glares they had ever seen.’ A witness who had been haunted by their doppelgänger.

"There was also always a feeling that somebody was coming up behind you, but when you turned around, nobody and nothing was there. Loud bangs and knocks would also be common place, along with items going missing then turning up several months later once the house had been pulled apart trying to find them. We even eventually called it Derek, so any time something went missing, we always said that Derek had moved it." 

"Whilst stood in the Church area, both myself and my colleague heard voices, almost like singing. We also heard footsteps even though we were both standing still. It was amazing looking round and we walked the halls of the school chatting about what had happened there and how we would not be surprised if it was haunted. When leaving the building, the security guards asked us if we heard or saw anything in there, and when we talked about what we'd heard, they said that they often see faces at the windows and flashes of things inside." 

‘I received a telephone call from a very distressed Marianne, informing me that her ‘unwelcome guest’ had been causing absolute mayhem inside her home. Objects were being thrown around, doors were opening mysteriously and slamming closed on their own, horrendous thumps and bangs were reverberating around the house, taps were being turned on, their possessions were disappearing from their original places and then re-appearing just as mysteriously, and their young child Robert began to see ‘people’ in the house.’ (Excerpt from an interview with Darren W. Ritson, paranormal investigator and co-author of the book The South Shields Poltergeist: One Family’s Fight Against an Invisible Intruder) 

"We came here, we were just married, and we were up in the greenhouses, picking grapes. And my wife Helen had her hand out, and she suddenly felt little fingers pulling off her wedding ring. Directly below her there was stone, and it never hit the floor. It should have gone ‘ping’! So we searched and searched, we dug up the greenhouse. And I knew that in that greenhouse childish laughter had been heard, so I said ‘Well it’s the little people who live just one octave up, and they have a naughty sense of humour.’ So I went back to the greenhouse and I said ‘Well very funny, we’re all very amused, and here’s some silver for you,’ and I buried half crowns and said ‘And now can we please have our wedding ring back!’ I went back to the house, and a few days later Helen was turning out some old bags, and in this inner zipped pocket here, there was our wedding ring. Explain that one away!"  

After appearing in silhouette in an interview with George Knapp on KLAS News, Bob Lazar received a phone call at home. He picked up the and phone and said hello and as soon as the voice on other end began speaking, he knew who it was. It was his supervisor from Area 51's S4 facility Dennis Miriannie, with a chilling message...he simply said "Do you have any idea what we're going to do to you now". The phone then went dead. 

It was around midnight one evening, and I was sat watching television downstairs in the living room, when I suddenly and completely unexpectedly became very aware that I wasn't alone. The whole atmosphere inside the house became cold and dark, and I had a horrible feeling that something from outside had got in to the house and was now in the room with me......Diana Hodson, witness to multiple paranormal events at her house. 

On papoose dry lake bed, a number of miles from the main Area 51 complex, allegedly lies a research and storage facility known as S4. It's at this highly classified, above top secret facility that a man named Bob Lazar not only witnessed strange aircraft, but also worked on their systems and sub systems, trying to understand and recreate what was in front of him. This process, known as back or reverse engineering is common between military superpowers when one comes into possession of an item of technology which belongs to another. But what if that technology didn't belong to a superpower on earth...what if it came from somewhere else?

Throughout its troubled existence since it's discovery, this particular diamond had garnered a reputation of being cursed...but surely that was just a myth...wasn't it??? 

We've come together to tell you about a very real and creepy paranormal encounter which happened to the father of a very old friend. Stories of these amazing apparitions have struck terror and intrigue into so many of us and our imaginations for years, and tales of these spirits come from all around the world, but in the deep, murky and strange land that is the Bridgewater Triangle, there's a phantom hitchhiker that puts many of these other entities to shame. In this episode, we'll hear about some of the best sightings and experiences, and we'll try to find out who this phantom hitchhiker could be....and when we're finished, it's over to the brilliant Skylark Bell podcast, who'll take this legend in a completely new direction.....you seriously don't want to miss it.

This is Episode 1 of season 3 of The Haunted UK Podcast, and in this episode, we're going to hear from people whose houses didn't want to become homes. 

To many sceptic's, the odds are firmly stacked against the possibility of the existence of an unknown, undiscovered bipedal hominid ape like creature which is said to roam the woodlands and forests of not only the Pacific Northwest of America and Canada, but also other countries throughout the world. They're arguments include the lack of remains of such a creature...shoddy video and photographic evidence is frequently shot down......but have all of the witnesses who have encountered these creatures been lying, or guilty of misidentification.... This is the third and final part of our bonus end of season special on the legend that is Bigfoot...and in this episode we'll close out with some extremely convincing witness encounters.

It's 1972, and the location is Walt Disney Studios. The chief of animation, as well as 4 other animation specialists have just finished watching a first generation copy of a short film showing what looks a like a living, breathing, moving creature which should only exist in folklore and in the minds of movie makers and writers. Even Disney executive Ken Peterson is hugely impressed with how the film makers made this creature look so real. When Peterson asked the man who had brought the footage in to Disney, which studio had it been produced in....he got the shock of his life when he was told that it hadn't been filmed in a studio....it had been filmed in the forests of Northern California..... This is the second part in our end of season special on the legend that is Bigfoot, and in this episode were going to take a look at the most famous piece of Bigfoot evidence of all time.....The Patterson Gimlin Film. 

This is the end of season break multi part special of the Haunted UK Podcast, and it's in this episode which was chosen by listeners, that we'll be delving into the legend that is Bigfoot. Around 21,000 years ago during the last ice age, many scientists agree that a huge land bridge existed which stretched between North American Alaska and Russia. This is now the location of the Bering Sea. It is widely believed that this land bridge enabled human settlers to migrate from the Asian Continent and to begin to forge a new life in this huge new world. But during their incredibly dangerous journey, did these early explorers unknowingly invade the territory of a mysterious creature, one that now features in almost all Native American folklore? Stories and sightings of this mythical beast continue to crop up even today, ranging from fleeting glimpses, to full on encounters. This legendary creature is known by many different names including Dark Watchers, Ts'emekwes, Skoocooms and Sasquatch...but you and I know it better as Bigfoot. 

The response to Listener Stories Volume 1 was amazing, so a huge thank you those who sent in their stories and a huge thank you to all of you listeners out there for tuning in. So, we're back for a second and final helping of listeners stories with Volume 2, and this collection of tales from an amazing set of listeners, are truly fascinating.

Well, after 9 episodes and a delay because of COVID, we're finally here....the Season 2 finale and listener stories. All I can say is a huge thank you to all of you that have listened, followed and donated to the show via Ko-Fi, and to the ones who have sent in listener stories, you've really outdone yourselves this time. You're all the people that make this show possible and I truly can't thank you all enough for sticking with the Haunted UK Podcast and making it an amazing experience to write, produce, record and distribute every episode.

He quickly made his way up the stairs to the locked station gates....but there was nobody else there. He immediately radioed his colleague back in the CCTV room to report that he couldn't find the lady and that he must have, somehow, missed her. His colleague checked over one hundred cameras, but there was sight of her. This is Episode 19 of The Haunted UK Podcast, and in this episode, we're going to journey down into the depths of the London Underground. In 1863, a world first happened. A steam locomotive pulling gas lit wooden carriages travelled between Paddington and Farringdon. On its opening day, this train service transported an estimated 38,000 people between these two destinations, and proved so popular that other trains were taken from lines elsewhere to help cope with the demand. But what made this locomotive and it's carriages so special.....well this was the beginning of the now, world famous London Underground. Today, the London Underground transports around a billion passengers every year, and although the network now spans 11 lines, 272 stations and almost 250 miles of tunnels, it's an extremely safe mode of transport. Statistics suggest that for every 300 million journeys that are made on the tube network, only 1 fatal accident occurs. But 250 miles of tunnels would also suggest that workmen must have perished in the early years of construction.

What happens when we die? Do we simply cease to exist, or is there something else? Is there a possibility that the very element of our being, the thing that makes us who we are, personality, sense of humour, our traits, habits and our ability to process emotions, can somehow be transferred or picked up by a completely different person? Can the human mind, or soul or consciousness live on after we die? This is episode 18 of The Haunted UK Podcast, and this time we're going to delve into the phenomenon that is reincarnation. Regardless of whether you have a belief in religion, or if you fall on the side of atheism, what happens after we die is still a topic which continues to divide opinion. Many religions will paint the picture of a heaven type place, where we will eventually be reunited with the ones we have loved and lost. The scientific stance is that when your clock runs out of time, that...is simply that...the end. You're either buried or cremated, and your time on earth is over, never to be repeated. But can our conscious mind live on and, somehow, be absorbed by another human being. 

As I knelt down to peer into the bushes, I was met with a pair of yellow eyes, with black pupils. I've never seen anything like those eyes in my life, and I never want to see them again. As I backed away, a low growling noise came from the bushes. I fell over my BMX, then quickly picked it up and began pedalling like mad........part of a witness statement of the sighting of a wolf like creature. This is episode 17 of the Haunted UK Podcast, and in this episode, we're going on the trail of one of the most intriguing and frightening creatures of all.....The Werewolf. The legend of the werewolf stretches back hundreds of years, covering dozens and dozens of countries. Stories tell of human beings infected by a cursed bloodline that reveals itself in the horrific culmination of being forced to transform into a wolf like creature at the appearance of the full moon. The creature then goes on a violent rampage, needing to feed it's animal instincts.

"All people who enter this tomb who will make evil against this tomb and destroy it, may the crocodile be against them in water, and snakes against them on land. May the hippopotamus be against them in water, the scorpion on land." Egyptian archaeologist, Egyptologist, and former Minister of State for Antiquities Affairs - Zahi Hawass reading the curse protecting the tombs of the builders of the pyramids of Giza. It's the 4th of November 1922, and a young boy carrying water was about to stumble on an innocent looking stone that turned out to be the top step of a entire flight of stairs which led to the tomb of the most famous Pharaoh of them all. Archaeologist Howard Carter had been in Egypt since around 1891, but it was his partnership with George Herbert, The 5th Earl of Carnarvon in 1907, that brought about the most success for both men. 

At sea....no one can hear you scream!!!!! I spoke to the previous skipper of the trawler, and he confirmed to me that owning that boat was the worst 18 months of his life. He swore to me that he had seen an apparition near the prow of the vessel. The skipper and his crew seemed completely down to earth men who were genuinely scared, and it was then that I concluded that this was a real haunting - The Reverend Tom Willis speaking about his time with the crew of the trawler...The Pickering This is Episode 15 of The Haunted UK Podcast, and in this episode, were going to go aboard the haunted trawler, called The Pickering.

Take a moment to imagine that a very good friend of yours tells you that they have been feeling down and not themselves lately. That friend describes to you that they have been thinking of ways to rekindle their interests in their education, their hobbies and, generally, their life. Now try to imagine that you’ll never see that person again, and they’ll never be found.  

Imagine yourself on a lonely, dark road, lit only by the headlights of your car. You see a figure ahead, thumbing a lift. You know you shouldn't pull over and stop, but you do anyway. You lower the passenger window and ask if the figure needs a lift. The figure just nods and then gets in the back of your car. You ask your passenger where they would like to go......but they only point to the sign with a village name on it. You drive away, getting nervous by the lack of conversation. After a few minutes your attention is drawn to a junction. After you make the turn you look in the rear view mirror to ask what street your passenger lives on, only to find that they have disappeared. No....you haven't entered the dimension of the Twilight Zone.....You've enter the world of The Phantom Hitchhiker. 

A huge thank you to all of you who regularly tune in and listen to the episodes. Episode 1 was The Venetian Palace Haunting, a great story of a group of people who witnessed a multitude of paranormal events in the Palazzo Albrizzi in Venice. As part of that episode, I issued a poll and asked for all of you out there to name your favourite Horror or Paranormal movie, and I would try to write a special episode about the winner....so here it is. 

Both Commercial and Military pilots are regarded as being some of the best types of witnesses when it comes to UFO sightings and encounters. Their unique training enables them to be able to judge the size, speed and type of craft much better than a layperson, but what happens when one these highly trained pilots really does have an encounter with something which could be....truly out of this world.

To see a ghost, or to experience the fear and absolute terror that a poltergeist can instil, is a rare occurrence. It's also extremely rare for more than one person to witness one of these events....but what if a story existed that combined, not only ghosts, poltergeists and paranormal events, but also a whole party of guests who witnessed everything. Well, there is such a story.......and we're going to tell that story in this episode.

'Tis the season to be jolly.....and also the season to tell spooky stories, and the cases of the missing 411 are definitely creepy. In America, tens of thousands of people go to national parks to enjoy the scenery, wildlife and the awesome experience of being in the presence of amazing natural beauty. But over the course of over 100 years, many people have simply vanished into thin air whilst visiting these beautiful tourist attractions. Only a handful of bodies have ever been found, and those have some very disturbing and strange facts connected to their discoveries. So with the Christmas holidays upon us, lets delve into some of the strange cases of the missing 411.

In our last episode, before our Season one finale at episode 10, we delve into the history and ghost stories that make Chillingham Castle a prime candidate for the most haunted location in the UK. So much history has been played out in this building and it's surrounding grounds. So many famous people have lived and died here, but there are undertones of a much darker existence, with the likes of John Sage imprinting his terrifying presence here hundreds of years ago. Described by many witnesses, as well as the current owners, as the most haunted castle in the United Kingdom, Chillingham Castle has a formidable reputation as a sight where a huge amount of paranormal events have occurred. Many television shows have been filmed there including Most Haunted, Scariest Places On Earth and Ghost Hunters International, with all of these programmes displaying highly impressive results.

This episode is dedicated to all those lost in the tragic events of September 11th 2001. May we always remember the fallen, but also their families and friends......we shall never forget..... Is it possible that friends and loved ones can make an appearance to us just before or just after their deaths? Is it conceivable to think that some people can somehow harness an unknown form of energy to enable them to say a final farewell or to deliver a final message before departing this life? This can be an extremely heart breaking experience for the witness but, many others say that their sightings have given them hope and a renewed sense of purpose. Seeing a crisis ghost is more common than you'd think. There are thousands of stories spanning different cultures and religions that tell of loved ones appearing at their critical moments of passing. Whether it is to pass on a final message or to say goodbye, or to just simply give a familiar smile, crisis apparitions can give comfort and support to those who are about to receive some of the worst news of their lives.

This house is one of the biggest contenders for Most Haunted House in the UK. It's staggering to believe that this property has so many reports of Paranormal and Ghostly happenings. All types of people have experienced strange and frightening things inside Chingle Hall, from paranormal investigators and radio presenters, to tv producers and non believing members of the public. So, what do we think about Chingle Hall? An extremely haunted house or a place who's reputation is overhyped and overrated? I think I tend to lean towards extremely haunted house....but let's see what your opinion is.

When my family and I decided to move to the Halesowen area four years ago, we had no idea that, just a few minutes’ walk from our new home, would be not only a haunted park, but also a haunted house.....possibly two. The United Kingdom has hundreds of beautiful, picturesque villages which, every year, are pitched against each other for a number of awards and honours. But there is one particular village which, in 1989, was given a title which no other village will ever have. It's this village which is the subject of this episode.
